{"title":"Brass Idols","description":"\u003ch2\u003eBrass idols for the pooja room\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBrass has been the default metal for Indian ritual objects for a very long time, and the reasons turn out to be practical as much as devotional. It is heavy enough to sit stable. It takes fine casting detail. And it tolerates being washed in milk, water, kumkum and turmeric without degrading, which almost nothing else does. Copper, softer and more reactive, needs polishing aggressive enough to wear away a deity's features over the years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is the real reason brass became the ritual metal. Not vibration, not energy. Chemistry.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt answers to pital across most of North India, and you will see the same object called a brass murti, a brass ki murti, a bhagwan murti, a brass statue or a vigraham depending on who is writing the listing. All the same metal and the same piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eHow ours are cast\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBrass is poured slowly into a mould made for that one idol, and the mould is broken open once the metal has cooled. Every casting gets its own mould, and the mould does not survive it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is the part worth understanding, because it is where the detail comes from. A mould built to be used once does not have to survive being opened, so it can hold finer relief than a reusable one. Sand casting, which is the cheaper and far more common process, works the other way: the mould is made from packed sand around a reusable pattern, and everything soft about a cheap brass idol follows from that. The face blurs. The fingers merge. The jewellery becomes a suggestion rather than a shape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is why two brass idols of the same height and the same weight can look entirely different at the face, and why it is worth enlarging the photograph before you buy anything.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHollow casting, incidentally, is not a defect and not a shortcut. It is standard for larger pieces and keeps them a manageable weight without touching the finish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eBrass, panchdhatu, and what the labels mean\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe messiest corner of the category, and worth being straight about.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBrass is copper and zinc. That is the whole alloy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePanchdhatu means five metals, and the tradition behind it is genuine, specified in the Shilpa Shastra literature. What is not settled is the recipe. The classical summaries give zinc, tin, copper, silver and gold; most Indian commercial sources give gold, silver, copper, zinc and iron. Those two lists disagree on two of five metals, so anyone stating one definitive composition as established fact is overstating the record.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe commercially useful point: panchdhatu is also overwhelmingly copper and zinc by mass, with precious metals in trace amounts. A panchdhatu idol and a brass idol are largely the same two metals. The difference is the ritual intent of the alloy, not a dramatic difference in weight, appearance or behaviour. And there is no hallmarking regime for panchdhatu comparable to BIS hallmarking for gold, which means no buyer can verify the gold and silver content of a piece sold at a panchdhatu premium.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe sell brass, and we call it brass.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAshtadhatu, eight metals, is also textually genuine, and the classical formula includes lead and mercury. That is fair ground for a modern maker to deviate from it, and fair ground for scepticism about authentic ashtadhatu claims on an object that receives naivedya.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhat decides the price, and why not per kilo\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBrass is traded by weight, so a good many people arrive here looking for a price per kg, and it is a reasonable thing to expect. We price by the piece instead, and the reason is worth knowing before you compare us against a weight quote.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA per-kilo price describes the metal. It does not describe the mould, and on a piece cast in a mould made for it alone, the mould is a real part of what you are paying for. And it says nothing about the hand-finishing afterwards, which is the difference between crisp fingers and a soft blur. Two idols of identical weight can be entirely different objects, and a weight price cannot tell them apart.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt also cuts the other way, in the buyer's favour: hollow casting means a large piece need not be heavy, and you are not charged for metal that does nothing for the piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat that leaves you comparing is the thing that actually matters. Enlarge the photograph. Look at the face and the fingers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhy brass turns black, and what to do\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCopper reacts with oxygen and moisture to form a dark surface oxide, and kumkum, turmeric, ghee and handling all speed it up. This is surface oxidation, not corrosion. The metal underneath is unaffected and a darkened idol is not a damaged one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA paste of lemon and salt, or soaked tamarind pulp, lifts the oxide: the acid dissolves it and the salt gives mild abrasion. Work intricate areas with a soft toothbrush, rinse in warm water, then dry it completely. Drying is the step everyone skips, and water spotting is why the piece looks dull again a week later.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrequency matters more than method. Tamarind and lemon are mildly abrasive, so deep clean roughly once a week at most and use a dry microfibre wipe the rest of the time. Over-cleaning erodes the fine facial detail on a cast idol, and that does not come back. This is the single most common way a good brass murti is spoiled, and it is done with the best intentions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTwo exceptions. An \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/antique-idols\"\u003eantique finish idol\u003c\/a\u003e carries a patina applied deliberately, so lemon, tamarind and polish strip it rather than clean it. Dry dusting only. So are the forms a particular family keeps rather than every family: Kali, Annapurna, Varahi, Bahuchara Mata and Khodiyar Mata, Dattatreya, Dhanvantari and Swami Samarth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSmall brass idols, three to four inches, are the bulk of what moves, because that is what fits a shelf mandir and what most households actually need. Six inches and up is where a piece starts asking for a surface of its own. The largest here is an eleven inch standing Vishnu. There is no plating or coating on it to wear through, it ages honestly, it can be cleaned back indefinitely, and it will outlive you. It also darkens between cleanings and asks for that occasional half hour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBuy \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/gold-silver-plated-idols\"\u003egold or silver plated\u003c\/a\u003e if the piece is for display or for gifting. Those are built differently, on a resin core with a copper layer and the precious metal over it, which is why they are lighter and sharper at the same size and why water is the one thing that ruins them. They arrive presentation-ready and ask nothing of the owner.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNeither is the better object. They answer different questions, and the question is whether it will be bathed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWeight, and buying without seeing it\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBrass is dense, so weight climbs quickly with size, and it is the thing most underestimated when ordering. A six inch brass idol is substantially heavier than the same form in a plated finish, which matters for a wall shelf, a car dashboard, or anything being carried to a function as a gift.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the other question people ask, which is where to find a brass murti shop nearby: this is a category where the local shop is genuinely good at some things and poor at others. It is better for handling the piece before you buy. It is worse for choice, because no single shop carries every deity in every size, and the piece you want is frequently the one they do not have.
