What Is The Story Of Jagannath Idol?

According to the legends, there was once a powerful king named Indradyumna who ruled over the kingdom of Utkala. One day, he had a divine vision in which Lord Vishnu appeared and asked him to construct a temple in Puri, Odisha.

Following the divine instructions, King Indradyumna went on a quest to find a sacred log from a neem tree to carve the idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra. However, he faced several difficulties and could not find the tree he was looking for.

However, unwilling to give up, the king went into deep penance and was eventually told to seek what he wanted on the shores of Puri. There, he discovered a floating log from a neem tree, which he brought back to the kingdom.

To his astonishment, he found that Vishwakarma, the divine architect, had already carved the idols from the sacred log. However, there was a condition that the idols must be completed within a specified time. Unfortunately, the artisans could not finish the idols in time, leaving the hands incomplete.

Despite this, King Indradyumna placed the unfinished idols in the temple and declared that they would still be worshiped.

This gave birth to the distinct appearance of the Jagannath idol with his round head and stumps for hands, becoming a symbol of devotion and faith.

Symbolism And Significance Of Jagannath Idol

Having the Jagannath idol in our homes holds profound symbolism and significance in our Hindu culture. This captivating idol, with its distinctive and distinguishing features, carries a wealth of meaning that resonates with devotees.

They embody the belief that divinity can transcend all boundaries and embrace all beings equally, regardless of caste, creed, or social status.
