Choosing & placing your murti

Where it belongs

Face the murti east or north-east in a clean, quiet corner of your home mandir, raised a little above the floor.

Choosing the size

Pick a height that suits your altar — a 4–6 inch murti sits beautifully on most home mandirs, while taller pieces anchor a dedicated pooja room.

Kept with care

Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. Keep away from water and harsh polish — the finish keeps its lustre for years with a light touch.

A short guide

Dussehra gifts

Read full guide Show less

Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, falls on the tenth day after Navratri and marks victory, of Rama over Ravana in the north, of Durga over Mahishasura in the east. It is one of the most auspicious days in the calendar for beginnings: new ventures, new learning, new tools are all traditionally started or blessed on it.

Two customs shape the gifts. The Ayudha Puja, worshipping the tools of one's trade, makes a piece for a workspace or a new venture fitting, so a Ganesha for a new beginning or a Saraswati for a student. And the day's link to Rama makes a Ram or Hanuman piece apt. A murti given on Vijayadashami carries the sense of an auspicious start.
