The rituals and myths surrounding this elephant-faced God are many. A standard addition to every one of the houses, Lord Ganesha is a famous deity, loved by all.

Placed at the heart of every auspicious occasion, Lord Ganesha is known by several other names Dukh Harta, Sukh Karta, Vighneswara, Bappa, Pillayar, Vinayaka, Mahodara, and Lambodara. The names vary depending on the geographical locations of his millions of stout devotees. This Ganesh idol is considered a symbol of a good start and can always be found at the forefront of an auspicious occasion. Lord Ganesha is one of the most powerful entities in the Hindu domain.

What is the story behind Lord Ganesha?

With a uniquely crafted story, the mythology of Lord Ganesha is known for its lessons taught and learned. Claimed to have been created out of sandal by Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha initially held the form of a young boy.

Due to the significance of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati’s spouse held, it is said that the devas of heaven frequently sought him out for his expertise. Therefore, their home always held visitors walking in and out.

Goddess Paravati had asked Nandi, Shiva’s faithful companion to guard her home whilst she bathed. However, upon Lord Shiva’s arrival, Nandi had let him in. Slighted by the reluctance to carry out her order in the face of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati designs her own companion, thus giving birth to the existence of Lord Ganesha.

Goddess Parvati shaped Lord Ganesha with her own two hands in order to protect her by guarding the entrance to the house. While Goddess Parvati indulged in her bath, the little boy was given strict instructions to allow no one inside the chambers till such a time the Goddess saw fit.

Although this is the popular version of the event, there exists an alternate version that speaks of Lord Ganesha being crafted out of Goddess Parvati’s own cells. She was often found lonely and created a companion.

The little boy guarding the entrance was left with roles and responsibilities and was further said to have been awarded a weapon in order to stop anyone from entering. Several devas tried to enter the abode with no luck. Eventually, Lord Shiva, himself was not allowed to access his house.

This led the Ultimate Destroyer to set his army on the little boy, however, no one could defeat Goddess Parvati’s creation. Enraged by the audacity of the little boy to deny his entrance, Lord Shiva is said to have cut off the head of Lord Ganesha. When Goddess Parvati finally left and arrived at the scene of the crime, she was shocked.

Furious, she is said to have turned to the devas and Lord Shiva to unleash her wrath and grief, claiming the little boy to have been her son. She vowed to destroy all living creatures. Shocked and repentant, the gods set out to revive the little boy.

The devas were instructed to bring back the head of the first creature who was seen facing North, and this so happened to be an elephant. Bringing it back, Lord Shiva attached the elephant head to the boy’s body, thus creating Lord Ganesha as we all know.

India has always placed importance on its culture and heritage. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the God blessed to be front and foremost of all Gods would play a significant role in Hindu mythology and subsequently the decor of every blue-blooded Hindu.

Blessed to be prayed upon first, the inculcation of Lord Ganesha idols, statues, pictures, and another symbol representing this god is synonymous with every puja room.

Ganesh idols are considered to be holy and spiritual, guarding away evil and bringing prosperity to those who worship him. This is a widespread belief that is being followed faithfully for eons.

The statues have undergone their own set of evolution, moving from pottery and clay idols to bronze, copper, silver, and other alloys.

The statues of this beloved deity have reached a point where it is coveted not just for their brilliant religious values and sentiments, but for the sheer beauty with which they are crafted.

With an adorable pot-belly, a majestic trunk, and a tiny rodent companion, Lord Ganesha undoubtedly is on the top worshipped and loved Gods of the Hindu religion.

What Does Lord Ganesha Symbolize?

Legends are lessons, they ring with truth. No mythology comes without several life-changing teachings and lessons that we have to derive from them. And the most powerful entity of the Hindu culture obviously has one or two of them.

The story begins at the point of privacy being rare even to the rulers of the universe, wherein even Lord Parvati faced difficulty in getting time alone. It then proceeds to explain the division among Gods and the hierarchical differences. Yellow is the color associated with the Muladhara chakra, where the kundalini resides, and Ganesha is the deity who guards this chakra.

The power entitled to Lord Ganesha is realized in his fight and the ultimate interference of Lord Shiva to end him. The wrath of the Goddess is feared and the gods scramble to pacify her.

The story advises in letting go of our ego and not letting it block our path to glory. Lord Ganesha is awarded the role of guarding over the Ganas, which is a general term denoting all classes of beings, ranging from insects, animals, and humans to the subtle and celestial beings. These various beings all contribute to the government of the Creation; everything from natural forces like storms and earthquakes to the elemental qualities like fire and water, to the functioning of the body’s organs and processes.
