Almost nobody buys these two separately. Walk into a shop on Dhanteras and the pair is what the counter is stacked with, because a new house, a new business or a new financial year all want the same two things at once: a beginning that goes smoothly, and money that comes in afterwards. Ganapati is invoked before anything starts. Lakshmi is asked to stay once it has.

You will see the goddess written as Laxmi, Lakshmi and Lokkhi in Bengal, and the set called a Laxmi Ganesh murti, a Lakshmi Ganesh idol, a Ganesh Lakshmi statue or simply ki murti. They are all the same pair.

Which side does Laxmi Ganesh go on

The most asked question in this collection, and the one that makes people anxious about a gift they have already bought.

The convention most households follow puts Lakshmi on Ganesha's right, counted from the deities' own side. Stand facing the pair and you see Lakshmi on your left and Ganesha on your right. It is widely kept and it costs nothing to follow.

What we will not do is tell you it comes from a text. We went looking and could not find one. It is custom, sincerely held across a great many families, and a set arranged the other way is not a mistake that will be held against anyone. If the two figures are cast on a shared base, the maker has already settled the position and you should leave it as it is.

What it is made of, and what you will live with

This is the decision that outlasts every other one, and the one most listings say least about.

Brass, pital, is solid metal the whole way through and the only material here that can be bathed. If the set will be part of an actual puja, with milk, water, kumkum and turmeric, buy brass and stop thinking about it. It darkens over a few months, which is oxidation rather than neglect, and a paste of lemon and salt or tamarind brings it straight back. It is also the traditionally apt purchase for Dhanteras, when the custom is to buy metal.

The white and gold pairs are built differently again: a resin core with a marble dust coating, and the jewellery cast separately in brass, electroplated and applied by hand one piece at a time. That handwork is why the finish varies slightly from one set to the next. They are lighter than brass and arrive at their brightest, which suits a gift. They are display pieces: keep them dry, lift them by the base, and no abhishek.

Antique finish is a patina applied on purpose rather than earned by age. On a larger pair it reads as something inherited rather than something bought, which suits this pairing better than a bright finish does. Dry cloth only, because a cleaning paste lifts the patina away instead of restoring it.

Whatever the finish, enlarge the photograph and look at the two faces. A pair is cast as two figures and finished by hand, so the tell of a good set is that both faces carry the same quality of detail. On a cheap set one of them is always softer than the other.

What size Laxmi Ganesh murti for a home mandir

Here is the mistake specific to this collection, and it catches almost everyone. You are buying two figures, and the listed height belongs to the taller one. Width is what actually decides whether it fits.

Elephants flanking the goddess, lotus bases and raised hands all widen a set considerably. A pair set at any angle to each other also needs more depth than a single murti. Measure the shelf end to end, then leave clearance at both ends for a diya and flowers, and keep the flame away from plated detail.

Small sets suit a shelf mandir or a desk. Mid-size pairs are the usual home mandir choice. A big size Laxmi Ganesh murti in brass or antique finish becomes the thing the surface exists for, and wants to be chosen on width first.

Pair, trio, or something that gets lit

A fixed pair on a shared base is the easiest thing to place, the easiest to carry and impossible to arrange wrongly, which is why it is the safer gift. Separate figures let you set the spacing to your own shelf.

Add Saraswati and you have the standard Diwali trio across much of North and West India, where the puja addresses learning alongside beginnings and prosperity. A trio needs noticeably more width than a pair, so measure before you fall for one.

The diya set is the one people overlook. The deities carry the flame instead of standing as murtis, so it gets lit rather than only looked at, which makes it the better Diwali gift for a household whose mandir is already full. Some sets include the elephants, which is the Gajalakshmi form, one of the oldest attested images of the goddess in Indian art.

For a shop, an office or a new business

This pair is as much a commercial purchase as a domestic one. A Lakshmi Ganesh idol at the counter or in the cash drawer area is ordinary practice in Indian shops, and the Diwali puja in most businesses is addressed to exactly these two.

For a shop, pick a set that reads clearly from across the room rather than one carrying fine detail nobody leans in to see, and pick brass if it will be part of a daily ritual. For a counter with no room to spare, the small brass pairs sit at around four inches.

This collection has one overwhelming season. Lakshmi Puja on Diwali night is the peak, and Dhanteras two days earlier carries the custom of buying metal, which explicitly includes idols and not only utensils. That is the one occasion where a solid brass set sits inside the tradition in a way a plated one does not. In 2026 Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November and Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November.
