The Legend: 108 Rebirths
Goddess Parvati was first born as Sati, who gave up her life after her father insulted Lord Shiva. Reborn as Parvati, daughter of King Himavan, she spent 107 lifetimes in meditation and fasting to win Shiva back. Only in her 108th life did he finally accept her devotion and marry her — a story of patience rewarded, read as the Hariyali Teej Vrat Katha during the festival.

How It's Celebrated
- Green attire and mehendi: Green symbolises fertility and the lushness of the monsoon.
- Puja: An idol of Teej Mata (Parvati) is worshipped with belpatra, sindoor, bangles, and sweets.
- Fasting: Many observe a nirjala vrat (without water); married women pray for their husbands, unmarried women for a devoted partner like Shiva.
- Swings and songs: Decorated swings and traditional Teej folk songs are the festival's most joyful signature.

The Three Teej Festivals
Hariyali Teej is the first of three Teej observances across Shravan and Bhadrapada, each with its own character:
- Hariyali Teej (Chhoti Teej): Shravan Shukla Tritiya — the largest and most widely celebrated.
- Kajari Teej (Badi Teej): Bhadrapada Krishna Tritiya, roughly two weeks later — centred on Neem tree worship and moon offerings.
- Hartalika Teej: Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya, close to Ganesh Chaturthi — the strictest of the three, with a complete fast.
