Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and god of wisdom, and is among the most widely celebrated festivals across India and the diaspora, arriving shortly after Krishna Janmashtami and just ahead of Navratri in the same festival season. Idols of Ganesha are welcomed into homes and public pandals with rituals, offerings, and the chant of Ganpati Bappa Morya.
Ganesh Chaturthi 2026: Key Dates
- Ganesh Chaturthi: Monday, 14 September 2026
- Chaturthi Tithi: 7:06 AM (14 Sept) to 7:44 AM (15 Sept)
- Madhyahna Puja Muhurat: 11:02 AM – 1:31 PM, 14 September
- Ganesh Visarjan (Anant Chaturdashi): Friday, 25 September 2026
Families keep Ganpati for 1.5, 3, 5, 7, or all 10 days depending on tradition, with visarjan performed accordingly — there's no single correct duration.
A Ritual Worth Knowing: Avoid the Moon
According to Puranic legend, Chandra (the Moon) mocked Ganesha's appearance and was cursed with Mithya Dosha — anyone who sights the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi night risks a false accusation. In 2026, this restriction applies roughly between 9:01 AM and 8:09 PM on 14 September. If it happens accidentally, tradition holds that reciting the Syamantaka Mani verse from the Krishna legend clears the dosha.

Gauri Puja: A Regional Tradition, Timed Differently by State
In Maharashtra, the arrival of Goddess Gauri (Jyeshtha Gauri) — regarded by many as Ganesha's mother or sister depending on local tradition — follows Ganpati's installation:
- Gauri Avahan: Thursday, 17 September 2026
- Gauri Puja: Friday, 18 September 2026
- Gauri Visarjan: Saturday, 19 September 2026
Karnataka observes an equivalent festival, Gowri Habba (Swarna Gauri Vrat), but on the opposite side of the calendar — the day before Ganesh Chaturthi, on 14 September itself in the early morning, rather than after. Different states, same goddess, opposite sequencing.

How the Festival Is Celebrated
- Ganpati Sthapana: Installation and Pran Pratishtha, invoking life into the idol.
- Daily puja: Aarti, bhajans, and mantra chanting, morning and evening.
- Offerings: Modak (Ganesha's favourite), durva grass, and red hibiscus.
- Community celebration: Cultural programmes and public pandals, especially in Maharashtra.
Eco-friendly celebration has grown significantly — clay idols, natural colours, and minimal plastic are now standard in many households and societies.
Why It Matters
Ganesh Chaturthi is about starting new ventures under Ganesha's blessing, overcoming obstacles (Vighnaharta), and — since Lokmanya Tilak revived it as a public festival in 1893 — fostering community unity. What began as a private household observance became, through Tilak, a shared act of cultural solidarity, and the public pandal tradition continues largely unchanged today.
