The halwa, puri, chana and chunri are the ritual's own core and nobody is asking you to replace them. The question is what goes with them, the small object handed over at the end.
Pick something small, auspicious, and made of a material that lasts. Children remember objects. A stationery set is lost by Kartik; a brass diya lit every Navratri is not. Buy one good thing per girl rather than padding a bag with five cheap ones.
9 Kanya Pujan return gift ideas that girls actually keep

- Bangles, chunri and a red ribbon, ₹100 to ₹300. Traditional, cheap, and genuinely loved by the actual recipients, which is the part adults forget.
- Journal and a good pen, ₹200 to ₹600. The Saraswati association makes it a fair fit, and it is the one item here a twelve-year-old will use tomorrow.

How many girls, and how much to spend on each
Nine is the usual number, most often girls between two and ten, with a boy sometimes included as Langoor or Batuk Bhairav. This varies a lot between UP, Bihar, Punjab, Gujarat, Bengal and the South, and families follow what their families followed. If yours does five, or seven, or eleven, or does it on Ashtami rather than Navami, you are not doing it wrong. Ask the eldest woman in the house and buy to that number.
- 9 or more girls: ₹200 to ₹600 each. A diya, bangles and chunri, a coin.
- 5 to 8 girls: ₹600 to ₹1,200 each. A pocket temple, a paduka, a thali.
- Fewer than 5: ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 each. A small Devi idol from god idols.
Buy one extra of everything. Somebody always brings a cousin.

What to avoid
- Plastic toys and stationery sets. Lost within the month.
- Anything sharp or fragile. You are handing it to a child.
- Heavy or large idols. Over 5 inches is a decision the family should make themselves.
- Money in place of an object, unless it is a coin. Cash reads as payment, and this is one of the few occasions where nothing is owed either way.
- Different gifts of visibly different value. Children compare bags before they leave the door.
- Perishables beyond the prasad. The food is already the food.
How to hand it over
- Give it yourself, with both hands, not from a stack by the door.
- Say the girl's name. Thirty extra seconds, and it is the difference between a gift and a distribution.
- Hand it after the feet-washing and the tilak, not before the food.
- Use a cloth potli rather than a printed carry bag. It costs a few rupees more in a batch of ten.
