What to avoid
- Anything that expires. Sweets are for the day. They are not the gift.
- Anything obviously priced. A visible tag turns a token into a transaction. Remove it, always.
- Matching what she spent. A rakhi is not an invoice. Give something that suits her, not something that settles a score.
- Big hampers. One good object beats a padded box. Ready-made options are in gift hampers if you want the packing done for you.
- A generic "spiritual" gift. If she does Krishna puja, give her something for it. A specific choice says you were paying attention. A vague one says you were not.
Sizes, packaging and when to order
Size. Between 3 and 5 inches is the sweet spot. It fits a shelf, survives a suitcase, and does not demand its own corner of a rented flat.
Packaging. A cloth pouch and a handwritten line does more than another ₹500 of product. If you are posting it, ask for the piece to be boxed rather than bagged.
Timing. Order about 10 days out. Plated and hand-finished pieces are not always next-day stock, and Rakhi week is the busiest courier week of the season.
Care. Tell her how to look after it. Brass ages well and forgives a lot. Marble does not, and cleaning a marble idol is much gentler work than most people assume.
