Each year, Puri bursts to life as it celebrates the Jagannath Ratha Yatra — the ceremonial journey of Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, on chariots pulled by hundreds of thousands of devotees.
When Is Rath Yatra in 2026
- Date: Thursday, 16 July 2026
- Dwitiya Tithi: 11:50 AM (15 July) to 8:52 AM (16 July)
- Bahuda Yatra (return journey): Around 24–25 July, after nine days at Gundicha Temple
The festival is unusually inclusive for a Hindu temple tradition: non-Hindus aren't permitted inside the Jagannath Temple itself, but the Ratha Yatra brings the deities out onto Puri's Grand Road, where devotees of every faith can have darshan and even help pull the ropes.

The Three Chariots
Built fresh every year from sacred neem wood (Daru Brahma), each chariot is constructed as an act of devotion:
- Nandighosa — Lord Jagannath's chariot, 45 feet tall on 16 wheels
- Taladhwaja — Lord Balabhadra's chariot, 45.6 feet tall on 14 wheels
- Darpadalana (Devadalana) — Devi Subhadra's chariot, 44.6 feet tall on 12 wheels
The deities are brought out in a ritual called Pahandi Bije, to conch shells, gongs, and chants of "Jai Jagannath!" The Odisha royal heir performs Chera Pahara — sweeping the chariots with a golden-handled broom, a symbolic reminder that every devotee is equal before the Lord.
How Puri Comes Alive
- Bada Danda (Grand Road): The route linking the two temples is cleaned, decorated with rangoli and flags, and closed to vehicles for the procession.
- Culture on every corner: Odissi dance, folk music, bhajans, and spiritual discourses fill the streets, alongside stalls selling handicrafts and Odia food — khaja, pakhala, and chhena poda.
- Nine days at Gundicha Temple: The deities remain there receiving prayers and offerings before the Bahuda Yatra begins, stopping at Mausi Maa Temple en route, where they're offered poda pitha.
Beyond Puri
Rath Yatra is celebrated across India — notably in Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Vrindavan — and globally through ISKCON processions in London, New York, and Sydney, among many other cities.
Visiting Puri: Practical Tips
- Book accommodation well in advance — hotels fill up months ahead.
- July is hot and humid; pack light, breathable cotton clothing.
- Roads close to vehicles for crowd control, so expect to walk.
- Carry water and any essential medicines; photography may be restricted during certain rituals.
- Nearby: Konark Sun Temple, Puri Beach, and Chilika Lake.
Conclusion
Rath Yatra 2026 falls on 16 July — a festival that turns an entire city into a living act of devotion, open to anyone willing to walk alongside the chariots. Whether experienced in Puri or through a local ISKCON procession, its heart is the same: the Lord coming out to meet his devotees, not the other way around.
